Handmade Journal Giveaway

October 06, 2011, 15:59 pm  Posted by Lark

I confess, I’m an enthusiastic newbie to the wide world of TRAVEL. And I have found that one great way to treasure and revisit the memories from my trips is through the collection of my many moments through writings, photos, brochures and knick-knacks of the journey into an handmade journal. If you’ve ever tried compiling your travel mementos together into traditional journals before, you might relate to the design flaw I discovered in my own hand-bound journals.

Overstuffed. As you can see above in an old example, once I packed in the plethora of vacation mementos and photos, I ended up with ever-expanding, overstuffed mess. I finally gave up and cut whole signatures out to make room—a harsh solution for a valued journal. So, after my most recent travel adventures, I set out to make a journal that would have room to fit it all in.

Here’s my solution: I stitched signatures directly to the spine board which provided a fixed space between each one. There are only a few signatures and the width of the spine allows room for expansion. Plenty of room!

However, my old over stuffed journals still lacked a specific design element: available housing for my digital photos and videos. Who amongst us these days doesn’t have a digital camera in hand to document travel highlights? With this in mind I decided to add a disk holder in the back of the book so that the digital memories could be stored alongside the more tangible artifacts of my adventures. Tradition meets technology.

But wait, dear blog readers … I didn’t just make a journal for myself. I made this one to share with one lucky winner! Just leave a comment: tell me about a favorite vacation, how you store all your mementos or how you would make an ever-expanding journal.

To enter for a chance to win this handmade journal, please leave a comment on this post by 9 p.m. EST on Monday, October 17th. One winner will be selected at random from among all eligible entries and notified by Thursday, October 20th.

Hey Kristie, Ardi here. I have had a lot of fun trips. My favorite post trip journaling was also a mix of tech and craft. I scanned physical mementos so i could have an easier way to put them in a scrapbook. Then i can put the physical objects in a special box on my shelf. I love your idea too!

My Mementos usually end up on my bulletin board at work or, the 3-D stuff is organized on a shelf … a nice reminder of good times and enriching experiences.

I have been blessed to travel to Italy three times. I have one organized scrapbook from 1978, and a big box of things to be organized for the last two trips! I had such a wonderful time traveling with my daughter on the last two trips and I want to preserve the memories for both of us. I would love to have this journal for trips in the past and my future trips with my daughter. Thanks for the chance to win! It is stunning…..<3

This is a beautiful and brilliant journal – In the past, I have purchased journals and just removed signatures to be able to fit all my “stuff!!”  The DVD is a nice touch.

Oh how fun!! a favorite vacation of mine was probably one of the few times I was able to visit New York City. I got to do some different things each time, and I’d love to go back.

One of my favorite was going to Venice, Italy, with a friend for 2 weeks!  We’re both beadmakers and we were able to shop and visit Murano to our hearts’ content.  I still have all of my “stuff” from Venice in a bag, waiting to go into a journal.  This would be PERFECT!  It’s a great idea.  Please enter me and thanks for thinking of all of us!

lovely home for memories of happy days…

My favorite trip was a two week adventure in Italy and other stops in the Mediterranean .  I too took a journal to write in every evening so I wouldn’t forget a thing.  Thanks.

This is absolutely lovely.  Thanks for your generosity.  My favorite trip was a week my sweetheart and I spent in NYC.  It was blissful, and we reminisce about it nearly every day.

My favorite trip was going to England for a friend’s wedding. But, of course, I stayed for an extra week just to experience London and Nottingham!

What a great give-away!!! I live in Holland myself, but in the new year I am going to Oxford to study there for a term! I just can’t imagine what my experiences there will be. I am looking forward to it very much, but I also have to leave my boyfriend behind. (Besides the fact that I will miss him terribly, I wonder how our house will look without my slightly obsessed cleaning ;-) ) This journal would be fabulous for writing about my adventures in Oxford, the hard work I will perform for the university, all the moments I’ll miss my boyfriend at home (I’d need a lot of space!) and all the pretty things I’ll collect in the meanwhile, don’t you think? I looks great!

My favorite vacation is always the last vacation that I enjoyed with my family.  I love the idea of having a journal that is mounted in the spine of a three ring binder, where the binder’s outside flaps have been removed.  I love how these journals look “collected” over time.  You get the added fun of making your own cover & back flap.  Messy and eclectic!

My favorite vacation was my honeymoon in Las Vegas. It was the first place where my husband and I lived as a couple, and after we got married, we returned to visit our old date spots.

  • Daleanne

You Journals are AWESOME Kristi!  My favourite vacation would have to be to Phoenix, Arizona – so much to see & do, so little time!

  • Victoria K

Wow what an incredible journal!! I have soo many holidays stacked in photo boxes yet to be organized!! My honeymoon thus far is hands down my best vacation!!! It was in sunny Hawaii and a joy of wondrous adventures for two glorious weeks!! Beach everyday and even a July 4th evening dinner cruise with fireworks!! This journal is just the thing I need to sort my honeymoon ephemera into a real vacation tribute!!! Thanks for sharing such incredibly good ideas!!!

  • Sharon

Hi Kristi -  I have to tell you that on the last journal give away it sent me on a “mission”.  I haven’t made but one tiny one but I did purchase several bookmaking books and found out that Hollander’s is virtually in my backyard (uh, State!).  Add my name to the list of people who would love to win a journal you created.

My favorite vacation was going on a daytrip to Rockport, Massachusetts with my parents. Even though it was a short trip, I never really get the chance to spend time with them, so I did enjoy it (even though admittedly I probably had the whole I’m-too-cool-for-this teenage image going on).

mmmm. These are lovely. I wished I stored my memories in journals instead of the hodgepodge of framed photos, boxes of cds, iPhoto folders, and an ever-growing messy bunch of documents on my computer. Have so many good vacations I could share, but growing up in Texas and going camping in New Mexico’s mountains would be my first favorites. Getting up at the crack of 4 am to load the truck and pile in, to be on the road before the sun comes up, as my dad would say. To this day pine trees and cool dry air just can’t help but make me happy and feel like a little kid.

I drooled when I saw this in my inbox. Yes please!!!!!!!

I have journaled all my vacations for a couple of years now, some more than others.  My journal from Paris is my favorite.  I realized later that every day started with the comments that we were exhausted from walking so much!  This would be a great journal for an upcoming anniversary vacation.

  • Cyndy

The journal from my excursion of 11 days in Soreze, France (via a week in Paris) for L’Art Vivant with Carol Watanabe in 2000 inspired me for my sojourn to Italy (3 wks) and Greece (11 wks) in fall of 2004 to attend The Aegean Center for the Fine Arts.  Your beautiful journal beckons me pursue my next dream vacation to visit a dear friend in Korea.

I am making a journal/travelbook on our last trip to Europe right now… It’s fun!
