Realism in Jewelry: Still Life

Last week I received a very beautiful brooch. A photo-realistic self-portrait. I began thinking about the frequency of self-portraits in painting and sculpture and the infrequency of self-portraits in jewelry.

The descriptive categories popularly applied to fine art—representational, abstract, minimal, narrative, portraiture, landscape, still life, and the like—can be used to categorize jewelry, but this rarely happens. If and when jewelers are grouped together, it’s more likely based on where they live or what materials or techniques they use rather than on subject matter.

Just for fun, I’ve decided to curate several collections of  jewelry images based on widely-recognized art classifications. I’m starting with the still life—an inanimate object composed of inanimate objects. Infinite creative possibilities. Infinite meaning. Arresting visual poetry.

What conveys the realism of an object?  What is the language of an object in space? What is the dialogue between objects? What does it feel like to wear a still life?
