Free Holiday Project: Felt Envelopes

No matter how hard you try to think of the perfect handmade something, sometimes a gift card is the answer. But you can still give with handmade style! These super-simple-to-make felt envelopes, using Cathy Gaubert’s too cute candy cane appliques (from Fa La La La Felt), are perfect for last-minute hand sewing on the road. Find out how to make them after the jump.

First, gather up the following: 9 x 12 inch sheet of felt, a scrap of white or cream felt, two matching buttons, red and white floss, a fabric marker, and a needle.

Enlarge, trace, or free-hand draw the candy cane template from Fa La La La Felt (or draw your own simple shape) onto paper. Cut the shape out, trace it onto white or cream felt with a fabric marker, and cut out the felt shape.

Next, cut your felt to size. For a standard gift card, I cut a 3.5 x 11 inch strip of felt. Round off one of the ends of the strip.

Glue the candy cane shape to the front of the felt panel so that when you fold the envelope, it appears in the front right or left corner.

With red floss (using Cathy’s handy idea!), create straight stitches over the candy cane shape to hold it in place.

Next, add a button just above the candy cane in the center of the panel. Attach the other button to the front side of the flap, leaving a tail with the excess floss. Knot the ends of the tail.

Fold the envelope into shape, pin the side seams together, and straight stitch along each edge either by machine or hand. Insert your gift card and voila: “handmade” giving!

This is a great idea for me. I have been sick this month and have had no time for shopping.
They would make nice gift card holders.

A great idea for reusable wrapping. Cutting out a flower or butterfly or ….?…. would make it less holiday-specific and it could be used year round. Thanks for a great idea
