It’s week two of our Chunky Knits Knit-a-long, and we’ve made some great progress on our hats!
One of my favorite things about simple knitting patterns is their easy adaptability. I love making small modifications to knitting patterns to help them fit my body and my style. For those who enjoy modifying patterns as much as I do, take a look at the changes I’ve decided to implement in my rendition of the hat.
I decided to work with my red Berocco Ultra Alpaca skein, and the little heart buttons I picked out were smaller than the size the pattern recommended. In order to accommodate this change, I decided not to include buttonholes in my garter band (my tiny buttons would have slipped right out). Instead of buttoning the garter flap down, I will sew it permanently in place, and use the buttons as a decorative bonus!
I also decided to slightly change the way that the garter flap is created. Instead of binding off at the end of the final garter row, I bound off at the beginning of the row. This allowed me to begin knitting in the round without cutting and reattaching my yarn!
The pattern we are following can be found here, for those who are just now joining us! There is still one more week to join us in our knit-along.
