A Holiday Etsy Wish List for My Dog, Part 2

December 20, 2013, 13:46 pm  Posted by Beth Sweet

Certified Coziness Expert

The other day I shared a post on behalf of my sweet little dog, who has been working on her own Christmas wish list all year long. Her first post focused on gorgeous dog portraits made by Etsy artists, and this second post shines a light on the warm, cozy, and fashion-forward items she loves on Etsy. As an expert in coziness (see photo), she’s a good curator for this kind of thing.

These projects!! Don’t you just love that heart sweater? Have you ever seen a bow tie look so dapper? And, c’mon, I think we all can agree that a cozy fleece-lined snuggle sack bed is basically what every single one of us needs in the new year.

Thanks to these talented artists for creating such awesome stuff for our dear little pups!

Happy Pawlidays, everyone.

A Holiday Wish List for My Dog

December 04, 2013, 10:16 am  Posted by Beth Sweet

See? My dog loves Etsy.

Boy, do I love Etsy: that mecca of handmade, creative, inspiring wonderfulness. The walls in my home are adorned with prints from Etsy sellers, I sport jewelry made by incredible Etsy artists, my friends have received gifts I’ve purchased on Etsy, and there’s even an Etsy-sourced jar of hand balm and lip gloss rolling around in my purse.

But I’m not alone in that love, and I’m guessing you aren’t, either: my dog loves Etsy. (She does. She told me. Stop rolling your eyes.)  She especially loves Etsy during the holidays.

Seriously, my own holiday wish list pales in comparison to the gifts my dog has starred from these amazing designers, so I’m giving the floor to my Little Gal, who has made TWO wish lists on Etsy. Here’s the first of her holiday finds: a collection of dog-loving portraits.

Thanks to the amazing artists featured here for creating such awesome work! Individual photos and links listed below.

St. Patty’s Day finds: Green Necklaces on Etsy

March 15, 2013, 14:46 pm  Posted by Beth Sweet

When it comes to Saint Patrick’s Day, there’s a pretty clear theme: GREEN. Green everything! Lucky green socks, green shamrock glasses, green everything-you-wear, green food, green beer, green green green. (One more for good luck: green!)

In the festive spirit of St. Patty’s Day and its green, green theme, I took a stroll through Etsy and feasted my eyes on these lovely necklaces. From a pale, delicate seafoam to a deep, forest pine, there’s quite a beautiful spectrum of greens to be found, and these pretty accessories truly capture a variety of styles, textures, shapes, and personalities.

Thank you to the Etsy sellers mentioned below for sharing these charming green necklaces, and Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you all!

Put a Ring on It: Resin Rings

February 14, 2013, 11:40 am  Posted by Beth Sweet

Happy Valentine’s Day, friends.

Wait, let me try that again: Happy Be-Kind-To-Each-Other-All-The-Time, everybody.

There.

Yesterday was my first in a four-day exploration of the beauty of eye-catching, intriguing rings and their unique role as a symbol of love worldwide. During this Season of Love, our thoughts turn to how we give and receive love, and we have a heightened opportunity to focus on the people we love best in our lives. Pretty great, right?

Valentine’s Day isn’t limited to romantic love, and just like we are connected through love to many dear people, rings aren’t limited to just one style, material, or function. Yes, those sparkly traditional diamond rings are lovely, but there’s so much character and personality in the un-traditional, the unexpected, the “woah, that’s awesome.”

Today I explore the wide, stunning world of resin rings—bright pops of color, platforms for precious flowers, and vessels of gold—these beauties are meant to steal your affection and never give it back.

A very big thank you to the talented, innovative Etsy artists featured below—what creative vision you all have!

Put a Ring on It: Petite Rings

February 13, 2013, 16:33 pm  Posted by Beth Sweet

Greater poets and thinkers before me have said this more eloquently, I’m sure, but it’s my belief that love is the common thread that brings us together.

You work because maybe you love your career field, or maybe you’re supporting your family, or maybe you really really love trips to the Outer Banks and your job gets you there.

You create because you love the process, or you thrive on the challenge, or you simply can’t not bring artfulness and innovation into the world.

You connect with other people because it’s human nature, or you love the sense of being rooted in community, or maybe you feel it’s the main reason why any of us are here in the first place.

Whatever you do, wherever you go, however you prioritize the unique elements of your very own Big Picture in Life, chances are they’re tied to the concept of love, and we’re all connected by that commonality—love really is what brings us together.

It’s pretty great that we have a holiday that celebrates this concept, and I like to think that Valentine’s Day causes each of us to reflect on love at least a little bit, especially if it extends beyond romantic love into the realms of good friends, treasured family, favorite vet techs and librarians and next-door-neighbors and teachers and colleagues and mentors and musicians and purring cats and wiggly dogs and, well, everyone.

With all of this in mind—all this Love stuff—I’ve been thinking about how we symbolize it and communicate it. Hearts, cards, flowers, and chocolate are a big deal during this time of year, and so are rings. So I decided to do some (super delightful) meandering through Etsy where I collected images of eye-catching rings, rings that might not be your typical sparkly proposal diamond, but instead were beautiful in unexpected ways.

Today is the first of four days of my ring finds, and I thank the incredibly talented artists mentioned below for creating such thoughtful, intriguing, stunning, sweet, novel, and phenomenal work.

High five, Etsy, and Happy Season of Love, everyone.

…by the way, if you decide that you need to listen to a certain amazing pop star while reading this post, no one’s gonna stop you.

Valentine Recipe: Vanilla Caramels

February 08, 2013, 15:39 pm  Posted by Beth Sweet

There’s a lot to be said for Valentine’s Day: it’s a celebration of the spirit of love, and there are so many ways to recognize that sentiment, especially if you’ve ever navigated by the compass of your sweet tooth (which, let’s be honest, some of us [ahem] do on a regular basis).

I like to think of Valentine’s Day as less of a huge bonanza for romantic love, and more of a time to show appreciation for the love of (and for) friends, family, community, and ourselves. It’s a perfect time—during the short, wintery days of February—to brighten the lives of all the people who bring sunshine into our own days, and one of the sweetest and prettiest ways to do that is with a little handmade I-Love-You.

As a craft publisher, we think, talk, and blog about handmade all the time, and there are countless ways to create a love-inspired special something for a lovely special someone. With that in mind, allow me to suggest a simple, delicious, and beautiful option: handmade vanilla caramels. Golden, soft strips of chewy caramel mellowed with the flavor of vanilla bean, rich cream and butter, and all the love you can pour into it.

.

This recipe for Vanilla Caramels comes from Sweet Confections: Beautiful Candy to Make at Home by Nina Wanat. It makes 64 pieces of caramel, and we’ve included instructions for not just this recipe, but also for the basics of caramelizing sugar with some handy step-by-step photos. (Also: not only will you and your Valentine pals swoon over the decadent taste of these treats, but your kitchen will smell heavenly while you’re making them. Win, win, win, I say.)

So whether you’re sharing appreciation for your family and friends, your next-door neighbor, your dog’s best vet tech, or your hard-working classmates, Valentine’s Day is always sweet with a little bit of handmade, homemade love.
