Craft-In contributor Katy Yellen can do amazing things with a hook and yarn. Check her out! She’s a crochet whiz and adorable to boot. In her Craft-In booklet, she shows you, step-by-step, how to make your own crochet cactus. Here’s the accelerated version.

Impressive, no? I think Katy knocked that one out in under 12 minutes.

Want to start your own crochet cactus garden? Leave a comment on this post by midnight on Wednesday, November 17th, and you’ll be entered to win a copy of Craft-In plus one of Katy’s original handmade cacti from Craft-In. Official rules are here. The winner will be notified on November 24th. Any comment will do, but I’d love to know: What would you challenge Katy to crochet next? Cacti are her specialty, but I bet she could crochet a pretty awesome jade plant. Check out her Etsy shop too for an assortment of crochet plushies and sweet little stitched cat treats. Katy’s handiwork is truly beautiful, and fun! Good luck!

UPDATE: The winning comments/commenters have been determined by a random number generator at random.org. Congrats to Robin, Kristen, and Naomi!

Special thanks to Asheville’s favorite band, Now You See Them, for generously granting us permission to use their song, Don’t Give Up On Me, in the video. Now You See Them is the best!

Halloween is over, you’ve made a ghouly girl and eaten way too much candy. Isn’t it time for something nice and refreshing and good for you too? Like fruit. Or, better: like strawberries! Sadly, my favorite fruit isn’t in season right now, but lucky for all of us, there are everlasting strawberries. Yes, there are strawberry fields forever, and you, my Craft-In friends can make your very own–in felt! Craft-In designer Jeanette Lim shows you how inside her scrumptious little booklet–one of 12 sweet project booklets inside the Craft-In box-set. How will you display your Craft-In felt strawberries? Here are some ideas!

Craft-In: 12 Project Booklets for Your Own Crafty Gatherings

Exhibit A: They look terrific as they are, together:

Strawberries, forever in-season

Exhibit B: You can wear one like a brooch, and hand the rest out to five lucky friends. Sweet strawberry posse!

What else can you think of?

For a chance to win Jeanette’s handcrafted strawberries and a copy of Craft-In, leave a comment on this post by Wednesday, November 10th by midnight. The winner will be chosen at random and contacted by November 17th. Official rules are here.

Any comment will do, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of the following: 1) What you’ll do with these strawberries if you win. 2) Your favorite recipe with actual strawberries. 3) Your favorite Beatles song (I know, tough one.) Good luck! See you next week for a super duper Craft-In Wednesday you won’t want to miss!

UPDATE: The winning comment for this giveaway, as determined by the random number generator at random.org, was a_mecom. Congrats!

This past weekend, we celebrated Craft-In with a book launch and craft-along party at our local Barnes and Noble. Were you there? It was so much fun! Suzie Millions, the designer behind Craft-In, and author of The Complete Book of Retro Crafts (Lark, 2008) hosted the event, and brought along 40 darling ghoul girl kits — a variation on her Paper Doll Party booklet from Craft-In.

Want to make your own ghouly gal? Suzie was kind enough to share her template so you can do just that!  And now, some pictures from the event…

This Dog’s Life with Ira G

September 17, 2010, 13:47 pm  Posted by Craft Your Life Team

From Asheville, North Carolina, it’s This Dog’s Life. I’m Ira G. Each FRIDAY, of course, I pick a theme and present a story around that theme.

In book news, we just got our advance copy of my ma’s first book, Craft-In, and it looks so cool! I’m sure she’ll tell you all about it when it comes out in October, (pssst, you can pre-order it here and here), but, just so you know, it’s a box set of 12 project booklets by some really talented artists, and has a painting on the cover by Michele Maule.

I don’t want to reveal too much, but let’s just say that if you like vegan cupcakes, hula hooping, keeping lists, fake food, shrinky dinks, drawing, moss, mini sheep, paper dolls, crocheting, painting, stitching, and hanging out with your friends, then Craft-In is the book for you! Contributors include Suzie Millions, Cindy Steiler, Julie Armbruster, Alli Good, Katy Yellen, Jodi Rhoden, John Murphy, Debrina Pratt, Jeanette Lim, Alisa Wagner Poage, MelMac Pink, and Maura Okuley. It will knock your ‘hawk off, dudes, and that’s all I’m gonna say about it for now.

Asheville Etsy Birthday Bash

June 21, 2010, 18:43 pm  Posted by Craft Your Life Team

Thanks to everyone who shopped, shared, crafted, and celebrated at the Asheville Etsy Craft Party at Lark. Would you believe there were almost 600 parties happening worldwide in honor of Etsy’s fifth birthday? Amazing! As a group of Larkettes, Ashevillains, and Etsians, we’re proud to have ranked in the top 20 of those parties by RSVPs counted at Meetup. (And grateful for the box o’ goodies Etsy sent us too.)

We held our Etsy fiesta outside and were joined by crafters, shoppers, artists, authors, mamas carrying babies, dads pushing strollers, people with dogs, kids playing Pin the ‘Stache (thanks, Kristi and Shannon), downtown neighbors, out-of-towners, and lots of new friends. It was one part mini craft fair, one part craft party, and equal parts awesome. We even got to enjoy the live music from Downtown After Five. Talk about a crafty good time. See some more pictures from our Flickr set here.

So here’s to you, Etsy! Thanks for helping us discover new designers and contributors for our books, for being a constant source of inspiration, and for giving artists everywhere a chance to shine. Lark loves you, Asheville loves you, and we raise our glasses, and our voices, in wishing you the happiest of birthdays, and many, many more to come.
